360-Brake
Designs of brake systems of motorcycles practically did not undergo serious changes for all the time of existence of the motorcycle. Brakes of Drum-type type were the first, and are applied still on motorcycles with small engine capacity. Disk brake systems which found the initial application in sports, became the most now in use. Their improvement passes on one way, this increase in diameter of the brake disk, and increase in number of pistons, and according to the area of brake shoes. But the Baldwin Wilson Development Corporation company made revolution, having created absolutely new design 360-Brake.
In 2007 they acquainted motorcycle community with the first samples of new brake system. In spite of the fact that this brake system is disk, however her design is absolutely original and deserves to consider it as the third type of brake systems. The main feature of the design is that it settles down, as though, in the wheel nave.
The brake system, of this kind, certainly applies to be the called konstuktsiya of year, and it is possible also the dyasyatiletiya.
“It is called “360 Brake” and it is revolution in the industry of brake systems,” Chet Burozski (Chet Burozski), from the Baldwin Wilson Development Corporation company located about Brownsburg, Indiana staff told. “The design is surprisingly simple. Take coupling, and let it works on the contrary when in usual situation it is free, and is established in the center between the rotating wheel and the motionless part on the fork axis.”
Brakes of “360 Brake” are the hydraulic brake in which liquid puts pressure upon the piston located around on 360 degrees round the axis. Movement of the piston forces to move two brake shoes which are also located the ring on 360 degrees round the axis and clamp the rotor. Brake shoes and the rotor have the floating design, fixed on five pins which are attached to the top part of the rotor.
“360 Brake” two areas, ring type use, the circular piston and the epiploon which (after pressure is transferred in system) allows brakes to work so quickly as it is possible that leads to reduction of loading by system, smaller wear process and smaller number of noise from blocks. The first question was rather high temperature, as result of the friction of circular blocks, without existence of area of cooling of the rotor.
Tim Wilson which is responsible for production could report that “We spent $1.5 million for researches and testing of the rotor and the material of blocks”. “In the course of researches we found out that big rotors (standard) work at motorcycles with speeds twice above, than our small rotor, making more heat and reaching more high temperature. ”During the testing of available iron rotors and the floor - metal blocks, we found out that the temperature makes from 260 degrees to 500 degrees during repeated emergency braking that very it is not bad.”
The idea of the design of the project is not unique. It has use history by planes, except for one tremendous aspect, namely the circular piston covering the axis on 360 degrees. Planes use the central brake system with three pistons located around round the rotor. Fred Baldwin thought up initial version of the project less than a year ago on the napkin in cafe and used in his concepts of the design of brakes for the jet plane with two engines. He addressed to Tim to receive some from components made by him, but Tim saw in it new brake system. “I knew that this design had the considerable potential, and thus I pushed Fred to active tests, production and sales. We quickly found additional possibilities for use, not only for the markets of the motorcycle and planes.” At first they patented the design of brakes, and did not enter the market while completely did not secure itself.
Results of the project of this design are non-standard. It looks that you have no brakes in general when actually you have on the average for 60 % more brake area of the block concerning the rotor, in comparison with usual brakes. “The stop is more smooth because there is no draft of the support at distance of 6-8 inches from the axis,” told Couples. Brakes cover the axis and hold the motorcycle directly, during emergency stops with full effort.
Testing showed that the brake “360 Brake” stops the motorcycle quicker and has shorter brake way, in comparison with standard brakes, in tests for 0-60 miles in hour. At repeated testing “360 Brake” showed essentially less temperature increase than standard disks.
It not all. Originally Tim was convinced that it is necessary to use big the master — cylinders on the wheel and pedals. It appeared not so. The smallest, the size the master – the cylinder works the best.
Installation demands “360 Brake”, that whole 2 5/8s inch of the material were removed from the wheel nave to establish the brake strictly on the center. It leads to removal of the bearing of the wheel which is replaced with the brake nave of “360 Brake”. Brakes are made to correspond to 1 inch, 20-millimetric and 18-millimetric axes.
Wheels from Currently Renegade, RC, work with Ego-Tripp and PM with 360-Brake and correspond to them for installation. Or guys from Baldwin Wilson will supply you with appropriate rasporny plugs.
”Builders of motorcycles could familiarize with the new design and serial products, on tests carried out by the company,” told Couples (Chet). “We are grateful to all who could to visit us, including Highway Choppers, Care Free Customs, Street Walker Exhaust, Titan, AMP Customs, Ram Jet, Hacienda HD and Hacienda Customs, Larry with Jail Break, Boss Hoss, Rick with FLX, Bikers Bay, Fang with the Arizona Rattlers, Knockout Motorcycle Co., Chandler Customs, Iron Horse Corral, Evolution, AZ Thunder Cycle, Hot Rod City, Bourgets, Jim Nasi and our favorite watering hole The Hideaway Bar, thanks Mark. They were all blown away.”
Probably, someone from visitors of the Motor-salon exhibition — 2008, noticed similar brakes on the Dark blue motorcycle, productions FCM (builders Dmitry Motkov and Alexey Kochetkov) which won first place at competition and was recognized as the best motorcycle (The chairman of jury Eddie Trotta). However, this motorcycle used the first version of brakes. Now the company makes the second updating which has the increased diameter of disks. Whatever you may say, the area matters, and for increase of efficiency of heat removal it was necessary to increase diameter of brakes.
Undoubtedly, it is the most interesting design which will find application first of all in castes baizes. From “360 Brake”, the wheel of the motorcycle takes the pure form which has not been blocked by the habitual rotor of the brake. The design allows to use “360 Brake” both on forward, and on the back wheel. At will, it is possible to establish one or two brake systems on each wheel of the bike.
